This project proposes a new garden entrance pavilion for a Georgian garden square. It will be located behind the Rutland Fountain that will provide focus, shelter and seating in an underused part of the park, form part of a new entrance sequence into the park from Merrion Square West, reinstate the Rutland Fountain as a focal point on the park perimeter and in which digital projections will be displayed on each of the stone side walls. This proposed new civic structure would replace the former park keeper’s lodge, which was attached to the rear of the Rutland Fountain and was removed in the second half of the twentieth century.
The pavilion has been designed and proposed as part of the Legacy project by the IFCF to raise significant funding for charitable causes by drawing on donations from the diaspora. An immersive multimedia display is proposed where designated areas on the inner stone sidewalls are used for graphic projection from projectors concealed within the roof void.
The underlying concept of the design is to create a simple modern garden structure that is in sympathy with the scale, materials and spirit of the existing park fabric. The garden pavilion will act as a display area, an entrance, a threshold, a shelter and a meeting area. The proposed external finishes are to be restrained and appropriate to the context of the square with the use of stone walls, stone paving, copper parapets, metal gates and a timber soffit as the principle materials proposed.
