Scattery Island

We have recently been appointed by the OPW to carry out a conservation and management plan for Scattery Island, Co Clare. The island played an important role in the history of the Shannon Estuary, from the early monastic foundation by Senan in the sixth century to more recently as a base for the river pilots, the last of whom left the island in the 1970s. It is a National Monument in State Care and boasts four main ecclesiastical sites, a round tower, tower house, lighthouse, a Napoleonic battery and over a dozen vernacular houses.
