Kildare Castle Gate House

We recently completed conservation repairs to the gate house at Kildare Castle, the only upstanding mural tower of the Anglo-Norman castle. It was converted into a residence in the sixteenth century, and later became a garden building that was enjoyed by Lord Edward Fitzgerald. Our client, the Flanagan Group, wish to carefully refurbish its interior as a small museum and bedroom suite to open it as an important heritage asset for the town along with the cathedral and round tower. Following careful repair of its walls, a new coat of lime dash was added to supplement the existing coat that had badly eroded over time. This will allow the structure to dry out while the next phase to weather the ancient structure is undertaken.
