Bunnadober Mill
20 Oct 2015

We have been appointed by the OPW to prepare a conservation and management plan for Moran’s Mill on the Bunnadober River near Ballinrobe, Co Mayo along with Fred Hamond, industrial archaeologist. This follows on from a similar plan for Bowers Walk in the town and to Ashford Castle near Cong, all part of the wider Corrib/ Mask catchment. Moran’s Mill has a beautiful setting and is a national monument, acquired from the family in 1981. It contains a unique example of a horizontal water wheel in Ireland, a testament to ingenuity and thrift far from an industrial centre. Along with the buildings and waterworks, there is a large collection of artefacts associated with the mill; all of which are to be preserved and hopefully in time, presented to the public. At our first visit last week, we traced the source of the river to better understand its context.
