Athenry Conference
22 Jun 2015

Fergal Mc Namara gave a paper at the recent conference held in Athenry; Irish Walled Towns: their past, present & future, organised by Marie Mannion, Galway Co Co Heritage Officer and her team. He presented an overview of the work carried out by HHA since 2008 to the town defences, and set out priorities for future works. He emphasised the importance of improving access to the walls, for both visitors and locals, demonstrating how this approach has been undertaken in the various phases of works. The infrastructure put in place often performs a multiplicity of roles, as structural support, access and maintenance and to allow tourists to interpret the national monument. There were interesting presentations from those working elsewhere in the country, from a wide range of backgrounds, giving a real insight into the richness of medieval heritage, and its potential to be more widely enjoyed.
